What is MLD?
MLD stands for Manual Lymph Drainage. It is a very light skin technique - it’s not a massage and it’s not deep at all. In MLD the skin receives gentle, rhythmic, directed movements to draw fluid out of the tissue and into the lymphatic system.
Lymph vessels are the body’s garbage collectors, and are found throughout the whole body; they lead to lymph nodes which are the filtering stations within the lymphatic system. Blood and waste is dealt with by the lymphatic system and then delivered back to the blood stream.
Lymph consists of water, protein, dead blood cells and fats. If these waste products can’t leave the body then swelling begins. By facilitating the lymph system to pick up the waste products through the process of MLD, surplus water is also processed and the swelling reduces.
Lymph vessels are very thin. 60% of lymph vessels are just under the surface of the skin. Pressing on them firmly has the same effect as stepping on a hose - nothing will flow. The pressure must be a very light stretch of the skin. Too much pressure squashes the vessels preventing the fluid and waste from entering the lymph system.
For those that have had lymph node removal or have lymphoedema, a medical style of MLD is required, which I also offer. I combine Manual Lymph Drainage with other treatments such as compression garments, exercise and skincare. This blend of treatments is called Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy.
My qualifications are accredited by the Dr Vodder Akademie in Austria and I am a full member of MLD UK.
